"Close Up Salamander"
Greenbrier River Watershed Association
This is a long-tailed salamander resting on an old cave formation growing out of a train tunnel adjacent to the Greenbrier River. When the men created the cave tunnel, they sliced open a karst stream and the formation has been quietly growing ever since. The Greenbrier River Watershed is host to one of the two endemic species of WV salamanders. Salamanders, railroads, caves, and human impact are a pretty good analogy for the Greenbrier River.

View overlooking downriver from existing DNR Public Access site on Strawberry Road near St. Albans. The site on Coal River was the original river crossing used by Indians for 100's of years. Later it was the primary crossing for early settlers prior to the construction of the Coal River Bridge at St. Albans in the early 1800's. It is reported that Mary Ingles used this river crossing on her epic escape from her Indian captives.
