The closing activity had students pretend they were a "critter" found in nearby streams. A clean container of water representing their "home" had various pollutants added until the water was so badly polluted that nothing could no longer live in the water. Students learned the importance of a healthy stream and what they can tell us about water quality in a stream or river. Insects, crustaceans, and other stream macroinvertebrates were viewed by the students, their life cycles described, and why they are important to the natural system within a stream discussed. Drinking water, where is comes from, ways to protect and conserve it and how water is tested to be sure it is safe to drink were explored during the presentation.
