Trout Stream Ecology Class Offered Tuesday, June 16, seven different agencies were present for the Trout Stream Ecology and Assessment Course hosted by Trout Unlimited, WV DEP’s Save our Streams Program, and the West Virginia Conservation Agency. The agencies which participated include WVDA, WVCA, NRCS, Trout Unlimited, WVDOH, WVDEP, and the Cacapon and Lost River Land Trust. The eighteen participants traveled to Three Springs near Baker, WV to view Trout Unlimited and partner’s ongoing restoration project. Greg Hulver, the landowner, was gracious enough to allow use his land for the course. The comprehensive course was designed to provide local conservation professionals with an understanding of the trout resources, concerns, assessment techniques, and restoration efforts in their watershed. Participants participated in several activities including water chemistry tests, a habitat assessment, an evaluation of the benthic community present, and an assessment of the fish community present via electroshocking. - Written by Heather Baldwin, WVCA Summer Intern

On April 29, the Moorefield High School Envirothon teams and the Old Fields Mountaineers 4-H Club, in partnership with the West Virginia Division of Highways, participated in an organized tree planting through the West Virginia Project CommuniTree (CTree) Program. Project CommuniTree promotes tree planting and education on public land through volunteerism in the Potomac Headwaters of West Virginia. The program and its partners invite organizations and agencies to apply for CTree kits to organize, coordinate, and implement urban tree plantings through a competitive grant process. CTree kits include: trees in a variety of species, tree tubes or cages for protection from wildlife, and mulch to foster good root growth. The designated area for this project was the sloped side of Thornview Drive in Moorefield, West Virginia running adjacent to U.S. Highway 55 along Winchester Avenue. In total, over 18 trees were planted as a part of this project. Participants gained practical environmental experience that will promote awareness and understanding of watershed issues. Additionally, volunteers and community members learned to work together to make decisions to improve the environmental and aesthetic value of their community.

The Hardy County RDA, in cooperation with the West Virginia Conservation agency, is working collaboratively to develop the new downtown Moorefield Historic District Community Parking Lot and Town Square. This large project is utilizing some of the newest and most innovative products to manage the stormwater from the parking area. The Pave Drain system is an pervious Articulated Block System (ACB) that allows water to infiltrate and be stored in a patented arched reservoir to maximize onsite stormwater capacity during extreme storm events thereby reducing the potential for pollution runoff. West Virginia Project CommuniTree (CTree) promotes tree planting and education on public land through volunteerism in the Potomac Headwaters of West Virginia (Berkeley, Grant, Hampshire, Hardy, Jefferson, Mineral, Morgan, & Pendleton counties). The program also focuses on enhancing and promoting awareness of watershed and riparian area needs such as storm water management, water quality issues, buffer zone planting, and soil erosion. The project is entirely volunteer based and engages stakeholders in the process of making priority decisions within their respective communities and offers a strong educational message along with a physical planting component. CommuniTree is a program of the WV Conservation Agency and the WV Potomac Tributary Team that is engaged in on-the-ground actions throughout the Potomac headwaters. CTree and its partners invite organizations and agencies to apply for CTree kits to organize, coordinate, and implement urban tree plantings through a competitive grant process. Twice annually groups can apply for CTree Kits for spring and fall plantings.
